Fukpig/Kroh – Split

I have spent a lot of time shouting about these 2 bands and i think after this release i am just gonna pack up my bags and live on the streets of Birmingham until i get to see these 2 bands live! A protest that will no doubt fall on deaf ears…. this is a split that i have been excited about for a fair few months and it seems that Devises Studios who, released this brilliant piece of work are very good at making people wait, But i have it and it’s Blooming Fucking well Crushing!

First up, Fukpig – And its what you would normally expect with the first track ‘Docile Subjects’ nasty blast beats and filthy vocals that you cannot get from ANY band around at the moment its so exciting to hear something so different in a world of over produced nonsense. We are also treated to a longer version of ‘In the Absence of your saviour’ which for me was one of the best tracks from previous effort ‘3’.
BUT, these guys really do leave the best until last with ‘The Prisoner’ a expertly pounding drum-line along with the occasional sample from the TV show of the same name, this track just spills filth and really brings to mind how wonderful it would be to be cracking skulls in a Fukpig flavoured moshpit!!

Second, Kroh – I saved Kroh for last as i have been looking forward to their contribution the most from this release and i must say the 2 tracks are absolute blinders. Its hard to avoid a reference like this but its truly like Mistress and David Gahan having a good ole’ fashion knees up! The closest thing you can get to ‘GrindPop’ (yes, i just made that up) its just perfectly catchy and still remains evil and firmly in the realms of the occult… this guys would be perfect opening up for ‘Ghost’ and i really hope they go far.

If your an idiot you will choose not to click on this or this, but if you do you are in for a real treat!

Steak – Disastronaught‏

This EP has been a hell of a long time coming, which I suppose they can be forgiven for as they have been responsible for creating some of the best concerts seen in London over recent years under the well established name ‘Desertscene’.

I think it must have been nearly 2 years ago that this band changed their name from ‘Ebbs’ to what we now know as the mighty ‘STTEEAAKK’!!! yet it was in the Ebbs era I first remember seeing these lot, and I clearly recall a person who I was watching them with describe them as just a Kyuss tribute band. But this was during a time that there was no way of getting a fix of this type of band as the now reformed Kyuss Lives! was a long way off. But who cares anyway, these guys are a hell of a lot of fun and most importantly they allow for big sing-along choruses which is exactly what you need when having a few beers with your mates (hence the reason I have had them play on 2 occasions at WPC nights in the past).

The EP perfectly captures the live experience with the overdriven guitars and stomping rhythms making this collection of songs a set that will not be easily forgotten, and I hear talk from the band already of preparing to record a full length album in the not so distant future. So hopefully word will spread of these guys quickly which will speed up the momentum and get more material out quickly (I sound like an impatient 5 year old demanding more more more).

Anyone who was at the Record release party this weekend at the Unicorn would have already been treated to a new track which if my hazy booze soaked memory serves me correctly was entitled ‘Whiskey Mule’……. the most important thing is that these guys keep busy as there is an very expectant audience that want to hear more but will hopefully not have to wait quite so long!

You can listen to these songs and pay what you want for them at their Bandcamp page right now.

Shebrew – Provenance‏

Anyone who has read this site before will have seen a very positive last year of a band named Kroh, it turns out that it’s the same front man for Shebrew. This increases my love for an already very busy Birmingham scene at the moment. The Grind and Stoner scene is massive there at the minute and with fantastic little venues like Scruffy Murphy’s putting on weekly shows it really has helped some fine bands get themselves a place to be noticed.

I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with these boys last year and I really could not put my finger on what sound they were trying to go for as it sounded like a slightly confused Neurosis, HOWEVER this recording is a massive breath of fresh air, it’s crushingly heavy at points but beautifully melodic in others. I am not sure what happened with that live set or if I was just not giving them my full attention but when first listening to this record it transported me back to a time of when I first heard Life of Agony and when an album makes me think back to when I was first discovering bands as a teenager it certainly puts a smile on my face!

You can get yourself a nice snazzy physical copy of this 5 Track E.P, Limited to 100 Numbered black underside CD here, or have a listen on their bandcamp before you buy it.

(Oh, and keep an eye out as they may very well be coming down to London soon to entertain you all)

WINK WINK NUDGE NUDGE!

Sedulus – EP

I have had the pleasure of knowing of these guys for over 3 years and I remember seeing them for the first time at the Mother bar in East London. This was before the current scene was as it is now and these guys were shoved in amongst some badly placed bands on a badly thought out bill. But despite an awfully planned night (and venue) they absolutely blew me a way and helped me broaden my taste within the genre of Psychedelic stonier nonsense. I don’t mean the band are nonsense, I mean that this band are very hard to place and like all the bands in the London scene right now, the influences are clear but their sound is miles apart from any of their peers and this is the good thing about Sedulus.

The first track is mainly an instrumental and sounds so different from what they have produced as a band before, they have already proved they are great at creating a massive soundscape but this track builds up to massive drop and sets the mood tremendously well for what unfortunately is just a 2 track EP ! I have said it before and I will say it again WE WANT MORE!

It is the second track ‘Alfalfa’ of this offering that really does them proud sounding like a hybrid of Tool and Earthtone 9 the vocal effect and gradual build of this song creates a really haunting mood and shows a massive improvement in the bands song writing ability which hopefully will throw them some well deserved attention as after over 10 years of hard graft they really do deserve it!

Go and get this Beast of an EP for as much as you can afford, here at their Bandcamp. And go see them and Steak’s album launch this weekend at the Unicorn for FREE!!

22:15 – 23:00 Diesel King

Thank you Desertfest 2012 and see you all again next year!!!

Wow…. what a weekend that was and I must say how happy I was to be a part of it all. Most will know that I was at the helm along side our brother in arms Staggerin’ Matt from Human Disease promotions at the Mighty Purple Turtle (the second stage) and we really did have some of the sexiest and filthiest bands with us over the weekend. Whether it be the grooves and swagger of the likes of Trippy Wicked or Orchid to the down right crushingness of Iron Witch or Spider Kitten this place was truly the place to be!!

After parties involving the Desertscene and Steak DJs or Classic Rock veterans meant we really earnt our hangovers partying into the early hours and even had a nice impromptu visit from some dirty Orange Essex folk at the end of sunday night meaning that things did come to a premature end but that was not going to stop the horde of Desertfesters having fun as they continued drinking into the early hours of Monday!

There was WAY too many good times to mention but if i had to name just one band as a highlight it would have to be the welcomed return of the mighty IRON CLAW and what a bunch of thoroughly nice chaps too… i was told by the guitarist that it was their first trip to London since 1970 so thats why i think they really do deserve a special mention!!

ANYWAY THATS IT FROM ME…. THANK YOU EVERYONE WHO PARTIED WITH US AND SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT YEAR!!!

To keep you going until then here is a short bit of the action I filmed from Stubb who packed the place out for the first time of the weekend on Friday:

The Bendal Interlude – Odourama Video

Filthy, Nasty horrible little bastards otherwise known as The Bendal Interlude have released a video for the title track off their up and coming EP. Been waiting along time for this one to surface so my excitement levels are at an all time high (Especially as the WPC bands seem to be very busy at the moment!) The video is reminiscent of some horrible 90s Troma film and really does bring a bad taste to your mouth. It almost seems to recreate smell-o-vision perfectly without you smelling a thing with some of the most horrific gag inducing imagery contained within.

Don’t watch it with your Nan, but do watch it with the lights down low and the volume high!

You can see these ‘orrible lot along with some of the best bands on the scene right now at our Summer Sizzler
