Blaak Heat Shujaa – Self Titled & The Storm Generation

blaakheatshujaacover

Blaak-Heat-Shujaa

I have decided to take a look at both of these fine offerings alongside each other as I was given the first album by BLAAK HEAT SHUJAA quite some time ago at one of the WPC shows but upon receiving The Storm generation was when I finally had chance to give them a listen.

The first thing that 100% of stoner rock fans will notice about both of these little beauties is that they were produced (and recorded) by the mighty Scott Reeder which for most people is enough to know its going to be damn good. For me though I need a lot more persuading as my favour lies in the more filthy side of things!

They are both very desert drenched in sound but with the first offering being much more psychedelic in feel and more generic sounding. this is not a bad thing as its a damn good listen BUT its the Storm Generation that gets my attention more. Its a much mightier sound and very technical in approach almost coming across like a stoner version of MARS VOLTA meeting the Progressiveness of greats like YES at times, the best example of this can be seen in opening track ‘The Revenge of the Feathered Pheasant’. The guitar playing is fantastic on both efforts and technically hypnotic which definately does work for me, its not quite as dirty as i would normally like but its dreamy and bluesy and very much worth a listen.

Just make sure you are suitably stoned before giving these ones a go!

Jacknife Holiday – Mea Culpa

Weednife

So JACKNIFE HOLIDAY really are a raucous little bunch aren’t they? They always seem to be getting into scrapes and seem to be trying to live the rock n roll lifestyle but sometimes falling a little short. The EP name itself suggests this as Mea culpa is a Latin phrase that translates into English as “my mistake” or “my fault” but what of the music?!

ITS GREAT, All of the boxes are ticked… The hell bound vocals, the groove and stomp that can be expected from this type of blues soaked sludge, its all covered. From the brilliant crazed evil of track ‘Just a Kid’ to the eerily familiar riffage of ‘Bad man’ its a damn good effort from the Northern troop and the production is grand too, not suprising as the mixing duties have come from Matt Richardson (Bastard of the Skies) and the Mastering duties from Dennis Pleckham (Bongripper).

The only complaint i would make is that it is lacking the sense of humour that many great sludge bands have. I personally find that a grand thing about this particular genre is that bands really must be able to laugh at themselves and not take it all too seriously from classic bands like WEEDEATER and IRON MONKEY to modern sludge newcomers like TRIPPY WICKED and THE BENDAL INTERLUDE they all like to take the piss a bit and its that (alongside the killer tracks) that works so well!

Once again thinking outside the box prevails! Well, maybe not as it seems a pretty obvious idea that the psychedelic stoner groove of SEDULUS goes hand in hand with lighting up a nice big spliff and laying back and staring at your ceiling.

Now this process will be a lot easier when you add this limited edition branded lighter to your smoking apparatus!

TORPOR – EP

359850

The mighty TORPOR have been around for not long at all and played their first ever gig with vocalist Nats at the last WPC event last year. What was seen on that night seemed to leave people in a state of shock after viewing such a formidable force that was quite simply not expected! In excitement i booked them again for the forthcoming WINTER WARMER WEEKENDER. Long story short, i LOVE this band!

This initial EP that has been recorded live in the studio is a damn solid start to a brand new career in music and i feel that sometimes people can forget how hard it can be to hone your sound on the first thing you release but this is a damn good attempt. Its heavy as hell and has the same bounce and stompe that was heard on the initial Will Haven albums which i really believe is the thing that sets this lot above other sludge bands around at the moment (my particular favorite moment being the “drop” in the song ‘Ashes’). I would love to see any man watch this band and try NOT to nod there head in appreciation to the infectious groove of these tunes!

Basically, get your hands on it and crank it up loud as these lot are going to be seen alot more in 2013.

‘Baitin’ the Trap Records’ is go!…

3099743215-1

The Brand New label from IRON WITCH bassist Rick is online and taking its first release’s pre-orders right this very second!

The fantastic EP from nasty bastards CORRUPT MORAL ALTAR is up and ready to tear the roof off your shitty little abode and this nasty blend of Crust, sludge and hardcore is setting the bar very very high indeed for this fledgling label. The riffs are there, the vocals are immensely caustic and the vibe is one of pure hate!

With the next release being the Vinyl version of Iron Witch’s ‘Single Malt’ EP you can be sure that very good things are due from BAITIN’ THE TRAP in 2013!

COUGH for the h_d_p/WPC Stage at Desertfest 2013!

Cough_Logo

Another damn fine addition to our damn filthy stage on the Sunday of this years Desertfest.

“We’re completely stoked to announce the return to London of Richmond, Virginia’s purveyors of ultimate doom-filth, the mighty COUGH, for the HDP/WPC stage at DesertFest this year.
Cough smashed into worldwide acclaim within doom …/ sludge circles with the crushing 2008 début album Sigillum Luciferi, followed in 2010 with the fully engulfing psyche-sludge of Ritual Abuse (available on Relapse Records) and a split with the UK’s own doom titans The Wounded Kings. Encompassing monolithically pounding, horror-raising, weed-tuned riffs and vocals stylings ranging from classic occult doom to downright demonic, blackened screams of desperation, the band have proven they are a force to be reckoned with both in this realm and beyond.
Having played across the U.S. in the last few years with the likes of Buzzov-en / Weedeater / Eyehategod, as well as even reaching to play a 2011 tour in Australia, Cough will most definitely be a must for any devotees of the heaviest tone with their appearance at The Underworld at DesertFest 2013”
Words – Staggerin’ Matt

Our Stage is starting to take shape and now has the following:

BONGRIPPER
BELZEBONG
COUGH
WITCH MOUNTAIN
CONAN

and more to come!

Iron Witch – Hangover Suicide

Hangover_Suicide_Sleeve_Front

I am so happy to be part of the IRON WITCH story and can thankfully say that at the London shows they have played with WPC have been some of their most raucous to date! Returning to Headline the Sunday of the upcoming WINTER WARMER WEEKENDER i strongly suggest that if you have not heard them then you should climb out from under that particularly boring rock you have been hiding under and come have a look.

This is their 3rd release since having met the fellas back in Summer 2011 and each time they get that little bit angrier and more nihilistic sounding. The 3 songs that come on the complete package of this release are ones that i have heard for a while as i have seen these lot many a time live and i have been gagging to hear the recorded versions particularly with the title track ‘ Hangover Suicide’.

Yes, the Eyehategod influence is there as always but the band have well and truly carved there own sound into the last couple of releases with a lean to more Doom and even Hardcore influence. Its going to be an exciting make or break year for our favorite Liverpudlian sludgsters but thankfully plans are afoot for a full length and i truly believe that once that is upon us these lot are going to go stratospheric!

PREORDERS UP SOON AND ARE AVAILABLE HERE AT ENDTYME RECORDS!

WITCH MOUNTAIN for the h_d_p/WPC stage at Desertfest 2013!

10934_logo

The time is upon us for the arrival on our shores of the magnificent Doom beasts that are ‘Witch Mountain’. Hailing form Portland Oregon, these masters of their art blend crushing sludge riffs with the female classic rock vocal stylings of Uta Plotkin. Its a match made in heaven and one that should not be missed as they have been very hard at work producing not 1 but 2 EPs last year that have been amazingly received and its their first visit to the UK so expect walls to shake and foundations to crumble at the h_d_p/WPC stage!
