Bull Riff Stampede – Scatter the Ground

url

These boys have i have known for quite some time as 2 of the founding members are from my small hometown of Weymouth but to hear this absolute titan of a record you would not believe they were brought up in a town that is best known for its Punch and Judy shows and Donkey rides! It has all the best elements of Modern metal and sounds so perfectly polished you would not be blamed for thinking this was a West coast Thrash band. All the influences are their Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer to more obvious modern elements shown by bands like Lamb of God. Its fast, furious and very mosh pit friendly (especially with track titles like ‘Pit March’!). Probably not a fan for most of the readership who like Doom and Stoner but still well worth a listen as you will no doubt be seeing a hell of a lot more of these lot in months and years to come. I can certainly see BULL RIFF STAMPEDE becoming a lot of peoples new favorite band.

Corrupt Moral Alter – Luciferian Deathcult

url

These nasty bastards from Liverpool were brought to my attention by good friend Rick who soon signed them up to his new label Baitin the Trap Records, and Jesus Christ! What a find. CORRUPT MORAL ALTER play fast, visceral Grindcore in the same vain as Napalm Death and Carcass yet played with the added youth and vigor of a younger generation except these lot no doubt drink white lightning by the bucket full with a little extra spice of Ketamine mixed in which leads me on to the blatant sludge influence in their sound. These guys have all you need for a ferocious first EP and very excited to see where they go next. They are a million times more psychotic then the likes of Hang the Bastard and they got swept up pretty quickly by a bigger label so I would be suprised if the same does not happen to these fellas! MORE NOW PLEASE!!

Alunah – White Hoarhound

url-1

It has taken me a while to get round to this album as it has been quite some time now since it was released. But lucky for me I won this in a raffle at a Christmas gig and have been meaning to write about it and ALUNAH for some time.

I have a great love for female fronted bands and particularly in our beloved genre of Doom and Sludge. I feel that we somewhat wipe the floor with our American friends on this subject (with the exception of the mighty Witch Mountain!). Give me the likes of Ishmael and Undersmile over Blood ceremony and Jex Thoth any day of the week and Alunah also follow suit. Sophie has a great and haunting voice that much suits this style of occult doom and further concretes my point that the Brits triumph overall. From the Weedeateresque start of ‘Dementers Grief’ all the way through to the 2 part monolithic track of ‘Oak Ritual’ it is more than an album, Its a journey and an epic one at that!

I may be the last person in this world to have obtained a copy of this album but if you still are yet to hear it or better still buy it you can by clicking on the links, perfect Sunday afternoon trip out tunes!

BLACKSTORM are the Final band for the hdp/WPC stage at Desertfest 2013!

BLACKSTORM
The final band to be added for the HDP/WPC stage are the mighty Brighton rifflords BLACKSTORM. Like the most powerful and destructive of storms this hardened troop of musicians rarely appear and this will be the 2nd ever London show since their creation, but when they have made an appearance it has been with powerful intent alongside the likes of Cancer Bats, Kruger, Lesbian, Saviours, & Orange Goblin. Featuring the amazingly talented vocalist Karl Middleton (of Earthtone9 fame) alongside side a fair few other familiar faces of the Brighton Music scene including guitarists Neil Kingsbury (ex- fall of Efafra) and Gez Walton (ex The Ghost of a Thousand, This is Menace).

They have been described as combining elements of drone, stoner, down-tuned sludge with classic rock and the vitality of hardcore and punk, Blackstorm combines crushingly heavy, catchy-as hell riffs with juggernaut proportioned rhythmic grooves and killer hook laden vocals. And their most recent release ‘The Darkness is Getting Closer’ was released in November last year showing a much more melodic and groove driven beast. If you like you your riffs served up with a nice juicy sing-along chorus then these guys are for you, just remember that rumble you hear is the sound of an oncoming storm, a BLACKSTORM!!

This time round is of the great Photographic talents of www.kage.uk.com who you may have recognised from the recent shots of WPC’s first ever WINTER WARMER WEEKENDER. The man behind the site is a talented fella who has shot everything from Festivals to little old gigs like ours and has a fantastic portfolio of work that has been gathered over the years, many of it published regularly in magazines like Terrorizer and Metal Hammer amongst others.

002

As I have seen our man Falk-Hagen Bernshausen is a very hard working gentleman and is always on the look out for new projects to increase his damn impressive collection of shots.

Get in touch with the man on his site and look back at our weekender shots to see just how good his work is:

March The Desert – Self Titled

4050602302-1

I recently spoke to a certain person from Brighton who said that there was a severe shortage of bands on the Stoner/Sludge etc. scene there apart from the obvious 3 or 4 there is not much, so I was very intrigued to hear MARCH THE DESERT upon receiving an email from them earlier this year.

These guys are damn good fun and definitely live up their name, John Garcia and co have a lot to answer for with this stoner troop with some awesome KYUSS flavoured grooves in this 6 track offering, they would go up very well alongside ENOS but other than that they sound very different to most of the Brighton bands I have heard up to now. As well as that Californian Stoner sound they also have they awesome little Sabbathian moments like in opening track ‘March’ where it drops to a real slow doom inspired pace which really breathes life to the track!

The production is really nice, once again proving that a nice quality EP can be produced by the newest of bands these days making this another ‘one to watch’ and a definite potential for a future WPC appearance. Just need to get my ass down to Brighton town to try catch them play as I am sure they will have a lot of gig offers if the rumours are true and the place is indeed suffering from a band related drought.
