Vodun – Eat up the Sun

1772684097-1

I had the joy of stumbling across this band not too long ago and it has been along time since the last time I have heard music that is so dramatically different and potentially game changing as these guys. Then I had the pleasure to see them live at the LIMB vinyl release show and I think everyone in the room knew something rather magical was happening.

VODUN are 3 incredibly magnificent and monolithic instruments chosen by the gods to be placed alongside each other. You have Ollie’s gigantic technical riffery, Zel’s titanic percussion and the soulful and powerful lungs of Chan! This is Doom for the soul (or SOULDOOM if you will!).

What a fine first offering from the London three piece for what is their very first EP (coming in at 7 tracks) I can not speak highly enough of this, the guitar work is heavy yet manic and as soon as you get settled in a riff another comes flying straight at you, and with this alongside the thunderous drums it just keeps you on your toes from the word go! And with the Ditto/Skin style sermon’s delivered from Chantal it really is a must listen. I don’t want to bore you with the relentless descriptions, I just want you all to listen to it NOW as it won’t be long before these guys are everywhere, its only a matter of time.

If like me you want to see these guys live you can catch them at my SUMMER SIZZLER on June 30th or this coming Tuesday at the Windmill for GHOLD’s latest release show.

Wizard Fight – DEMO

3734538179-1

This 3 track demo from Wizard Fight is just what we want to be hearing from our British bands right now… Simple, balls out, pedal to the metal Sludge! Very much in the same vain as their beloved namesake Weedeater this is a nice little taster and teaser for what can be a very good band.

They say of themselves: ‘Formed in 2012 by Luke Bolton (ROTS) and former Steak drummer Dan Kinsey, they set out as a two piece to play insanely sludgy filth with a good measure of Doom and a wee bit of Stoner groove. Early 2013 see the addition of Dave on bass adding the much needed earth shaking guts needed to add to the Wizard Fight sound’.

Having been good friends for some time with Dan Kinsey (Previously of the mighty STEAK), he has always said that he has wanted to be in a sludge band and now his time has come, make it count my friend.

Sea Graves – Weight of the World

The British Hardcore scene is rife at the moment and I think that the nastier side has always had a special place in my heart, when I say Hardcore I mean bands like Gallows, Feed the Rhino all the way through to much more recent Hang the Bastard. These sort of bands bring sheer brutality into the mix and its that you hear in the this release from the amazingly promising SEAGRAVES. Its heavy as hell and as punishing as any Converge record but has the added bonus of a nice bit of melody for good measure. A problem that this sort of band have is sounding too repetitive and these guys have no fear of that.

WitchHunter records are damn good at finding nice little British Gems and i suggest to all that they get involved as this is a nice little EP and definitely worth a go. And for anyone on the recent Cancer Bats dates would have noticed Liam wearing his shirt with pride, if that’s not a worthy endorsement then i don’t know what would be!!

WPCUnplugged

So with just 2 weeks to go until we descend upon the Brixton Windmill again to see Planets collide in an acoustically minded way.. Here are 5 reasons why all should come party with us.

1: BOSS CAINE performs with us for the very first time! With his Whiskey soaked voice and his Dark folky swagger, The UBER talented Daniel Lucas will show us all for the first time at the Windmill why he is one of the Best and hardest working musicians on the scene.

2:TRIPPY WICKED are performing one of their rarely seen all acoustic sets and will show us not only some of their amazing songs but also a big handful of their famed epic Sludge covers!

3: BRIGHT CURSE are performing an Acoustic jam for the first time! They blew all away at the last WPC Weekender and are now back to add an unplugged feel to some of those awesome soundscapes, really looking forward to this so get down early!

4:Its the perfect way to see in the weekend! With 3 rarely performing bands for a mere £5 its a damn good’un and a perfect excuse to have a 3 day weekend.

Bong Goblin – Wizards Brew

2411054716-1

This was another unexpected gem that cropped up after getting an email out of the blue via the GURT page. Their Bandcamp does not have much but what is on there are some very hopeful sounding jams one of which is this track ‘Wizard’s Brew’.

This is sludge worship at its best, it begins with a nice trippy effects laden intro that blasts into the sort of Iron Monkey/ EyeHateGod loving that you would expect from a band with the name BONG GOBLIN! It would be fairly obvious to point out that these lot are definitely NOT breaking boundaries but WHO CARES! Its fast, nasty punchy sludge with big riffs and crazed vocals.

A PERFECT WAY TO START THE WEEK!! Listen HERE
