Black Moth – Savage Dancer

pure292s-500x500

BLACK MOTH have obviously been paying attention to a lot of stuff going on musically around them of late. This 2 song EP shows a more focused and powerful band since 2012’s ‘The Killing Jar’ and it makes me very excited to think that once their second album gets started later this year they really will be able to pull out the big guns.

Last years album was very good and still regularly hits my vinyl player but there was a very garage rock vibe behind all those Doom like riffs. With both ‘Savage Dancer’ and ‘Tree of Woe’ though it seems to have elevated above that into a more of a faster paced Trad Doom territory which is exciting stuff. One thing that these guys need to be careful of is steering to far away from there Heavier influences to become a more “Radio friendly” troop but one thing you can be sure of is that whatever happens Hazza and Co. will definitely bring Riffs and Hooks galore.

Conan – Mount Wrath: Live at Roadburn

Conan-Mount-Wrath-e1359974126685

I have been on bit of a CONAN binge since their amazing set at Desertfest recently and been working my way through the quite sizable discography (considering they have not been around for an age!). One thing that I did notice is that most of the recordings do seem to fall short of re-producing the quality and sheer heaviness of their live performances. This record however, like most of the Live at Roadburn series seems to nail it perfectly.

The massive rumbles, the nasty feedback and the distant bellowing chants are all captured perfectly and the set choice is absolutely magnificent. Starting with the almost never ending ‘Krull’ it just projects you to the festival and (with the right volume) makes you feel as if your there in person. also featuring my favorites ‘Hawk as Weapon’ and ‘Battle in the Swamp’ this release is well worth grabbing and a good incentive to see them live too.

We have alot of people that help bands along their way but most important of all are the smaller labels that truly are the ones that help give starting bands the help that they need to grow whether it be by releasing material or simply help getting the name out there.

The first of our look at these awesome labels is SUPERHOT RECORDS.

Run by Chris West and Leigh Jones, these guys are hardened men of the field having both been in bands themselves and learning from experience what is required to run a label successfully and a job has been done well so far. They have released both the STUBB and TRIPPY WICKED albums as well as the GURT collection cassette and have much, much more planned for the future!

COME CHECK OUT THEIR STORE AND SITE HERE.

Koresh – Chump

koresh_chumpfrontfinal%20(640x638)

The world of the two front man band is a wonderful place, and having grown up with the Mighty Raging Speedhorn being one of my favourites its hard not to compare a band like KORESH to them. They are however, a million times grimier and hell of a lot more elusive than the Speedhorn were in their prime. Not to say that Koresh are in their prime or ever will be seeing as this has been labelled as their potentially last release.

The songs are brutally quick little gems and would fit nicely with any Hardcore fan as they would a Rockabilly Lover, its filth for all and with song titles like ‘Adolf Hipster’ and ‘Bin Juice’ the sense of humour is very apparent which is why I wish this band be able to tour all the little spit and saw dust venues and and down the country and record these albums on a much more regular basis.

A major problem I have with this as I did with their previous release ‘Crippledriver’ is that it comes in at about 15 minutes. I truly love grinding Fast paced sludge, i just want more if it! Never mind though, I will just spend an extra long amount of time just staring at the truly wondrous artwork of wonderful Unicorns whilst I cry and Wank…..

Bongripper / Conan – Split

Bongripper_1363977401_crop_550x550

I was so so gutted to not actually grab this bad boy on Vinyl and have been forced to listen to this amazing happening on horrible condensed MP3. It still is beyond EPIC and earth shatteringly heavy though, with both us these bands sharing their fame for being so terrifyingly heavy some people have to leave the room due to its immensity (definitely not me at Desertfest though!;)…

The CONAN side is almost never ending in length compared to BONGRIPPER‘s offering but that’s the beauty of it, they may be similar beasts but the Liverpuddlians verge on the edge of a weird battle Drone hybrid where their new American friends have a much more Post Rock build up to their tunes!

Its a close call on who’s is the better track but who ever it is, they probably both nearly level entire buildings whilst recording and playing this little collaboration.

Sadly, as said before. The Vinyl is no longer available but the Download is still available direct from Holy Roar’s site now!

Stubb – Under a Spell

stubb-under-a-spell

Stubb are a damn great band, really holding true to their Rock n Roll heritage with their sexy, groovy psychedelic vibes! Their first album still gets a regular play on the turntable and its still as fun as over a year ago when I got my hands on it. Which is why I am so disappointed that i have only just got round to giving this one a spin, maybe its laziness (but more likely that there has just been a shit ton of stuff out so far in 2013!) but it was well worth the listen as both tracks add something to new their sound and that something somewhat chunkier than normal.

Just 2 tracks are on this beautiful blue vinyl ‘Under the Spell’ and ‘Bullets Rain’. The first track leading you into a false sense of security with its lovely floaty intro before a massive stamper of a riff alongside beautiful Hammond organ sounds comes in with its ‘Beer in the Air’ singalong chorus. ‘Bullets Rain’ starts off straight away as an in your face tune and much more of a straight forward stoner feel to it but I could imagine this sort of belter as the perfect driving song (if I actually drove that is!)

These tunes are a lot bigger and brasher and if this is a sign of whats to come with album number 2 then I’m in!!

This new addition to our family of people that help the cause of all things loud and doomy is the fantastically hard working man of MONSTER RIFFAGE. This Youtube channel plays host to some great videos from many gigs and more recently Desertfest, they are incredibly well shot for what is hand held camera work and with a nice bit of sound mixing thrown into the mix on all of the videos on offer, it makes the whole experience one of damn high quality!
