I had always initially written off Widows as just another Clutch style band (this was without actually listening to any of it) and gradually over the years had various opportunities to catch these Nottingham lads live, they have always been a overly energetic live act with Lead singer chucking the microphone around like it was constructed of molten lead! But my god this band is so much more. Yes, sure the vocals are very preachy in the stylings of the lord that is Neil Fallon but there is something about the way that he slips in and out of the British/American accent that seems to really work for me.
This is the first full length from Widows since the initial EP ‘Raise the Monolith’ and it does have that nice Clutch vibe to it but certain songs on this album like ‘Kiss of Failure’ tip the sound over the edge of Stoner territory and in to that of a more Metallic Punk vibe which does give you a bit of a break from the norm. But with the whole collection of songs the music itself is fantastically produced and nicely balanced; it really is a record for sticking on full blast whilst driving along in your fiat Panda (but actually feeling like your driving a Chevy Camaro!!)
I don’t know if this has been done yet but someone really needs to stick these fellas on a bill alongside XII Boar as they sound like they were born to rock out as filthy desert fuelled allies…..
Have a listen to this beast of a record right here, and pick yourself up a CD whilst your at it!
